Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:10PM by President, Frances Carnot.

  1. Representatives from the Bexar County Elections office handed out application forms and members volunteers were sworn in as volunteer registrars.
  2. Art Hall, candidate for Railroad Commissioner, discussed his race and asked for our support.
  3. Larry Ricketts spoke about his candidacy for Bexar County Sheriff.
  4. The agenda was approved.
  5. Our speaker, Zada True-Courage, spoke about participating in the party nomination process starting with the precinct convention 3/4, followed by the senatorial district conventions (3/29), the state convention (6/6-6/7) and the national convention in Denver. 
  6. The October minutes were approved.
  7. Barbara Moschner reported on the Naturalization Ceremonies for September (899 new citizens from 74 countries) and October (236 new citizens from 48 countries).   Thanks to volunteers who assisted.
  8. Treasurer, Dick Waits, gave the financial report.  The nonpolitical account has a balance of $1858.32 and the PAC balance is $1824.36. 
  9. Discussion followed on the purchase of database software.  A committee with Dick, Linda Allen, and Megha Sharma was approved.  The committee would discuss future purchases and bring suggestions to the general membership.
  10. Darlene Murnin recommended that the organization obtain 5,000 flyers for the Naturalization Ceremonies from a union printer.  This recommendation was approved.

Old Business

  1. The organization brochure was discussed.  It was suggested that a mini-application be added to the brochure.  The brochure was approved with an application added.  Peg MacPhail moved and Angie Garcia seconded. Motion carried.
  2. Future Programs were discussed by Ruth Stewart, Program Chair.  December 7th is the Open House Holiday Party.  Security fees were approved.  Sign-up sheets were passed.  Donations to the Food Bank are to be requested. 

·        January 7th program – Madeleine Dewar on grassroots activism. 

·        February 4th – candidate forum at First Unitarian Church. Received approval to rent the facility at $150. 

·        March – no meeting with expectation of members involved with political activism for March 4th primary.

·        April – December 2008  -- Ruth reported on the programs voted by members.

  1. Frances announced that Margaret Montemayor agreed to be finance chair.  Darlene Murnin agreed to be chair of the nominations committee. 
  2. Darlene asked to be on the agenda in April since there was not sufficient time.
  3. Other announcements followed.
