Next Meeting

Monday, October 6, 2008, 6:30-8:30PM

NEBCD HQ, 7122 San Pedro Ave in San Antonio

PROGRAM:  “Political Discourse with Linda Chavez-Thompson”.   Linda Chavez-Thompson is an icon of the Democratic party and the labor movement.  She is a native Texan, the daughter of a sharecropper who entered efforts to improve lives of working people by organizing garbage haulers in San Antonio.  Ms Chavez-Thompson’s skills and efforts moved her to the top of the national labor movement, and she served as secretary of the AFL-CIO until her recent retirement.  She has served the Democratic party as a Democratic National Committee member and as a leader in the efforts to ensure the rights of minority voters, as well as many other notable endeavors.  She continues her passion and commitment to the lives of working people, and is tapped for her efforts now that she is back in San Antonio.  She currently serves on the Via Metropolitan Transit Board.  Linda Chavez-Thompson will be honored as “Woman of the Year” by the Women’s Political Caucus of Texas next month.

*****  In addition to a wonderful program, October is our month to bring donations for the Warrior & Family Support Center!  Home-baked cookies, bottled water, gift cards, pampers -- all of these items will be appreciated!   Our donations will be delivered the next day to the Center. *****

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Information on the November 4th General Election can be found on the Bexar County Elections Department web page (www.bexar.org/elections) and the Bexar County Democratic Party web page (www.bexardemocrats.org).  Early voting dates, times, and locations are included in this newsletter.  During early voting, people registered to vote in Bexar County can vote at any of the early voting locations.  However, if you wait to vote until election day (November 4th) you MUST vote at your precinct location.  This is state law, and provisional votes at other locations will not be counted.  If you did not vote in the primary, or your Voter Registration Certificate is not orange, go to the Bexar County Elections Department web page to verify your voter registration information.  Do this soon, as the last day to register to vote for the November 4th election is October 6th.  If you are currently registered to vote, your name, address, and precinct number will be displayed.

The ballot will be quite long, so it is recommended that you get a sample ballot to study before you vote.  Sample ballots should be available on the Bexar County Elections Department web page shortly before early voting begins.  You are allowed to bring a sample ballot (or newspaper, or other notes) with you to the polling location.  You ARE NOT allowed to wear (t-shirts, buttons, hats, etc.) or carry to the polling location material promoting a particular candidate or issue that appears on the ballot.  If you do so, the election judge can require that you leave without voting.
