Coastal Bend Texas Democratic Women
Monthly Membership Meeting Minutes
November 28, 2006

President Gloria Caceres called the meeting to order, and welcomed all in attendance.  Minutes of the last meeting were deferred.

Treasurer Barbara Cline gave the Treasurer’s Report.  She also gave the final GOTV report, with CBTDW contributing $16,224.17 to the effort.

Gloria Caceres announced that the December meeting would be combined with a Christmas party at Portabella’s Restaurant, 430 S. Padre Island Dr., Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m.  The cost will be $5.00 each, with a cash bar.

The program, “Looking Forward, Looking Back,” was presented by Gloria Caceres.  The program emphasized that work for the 2008 primary season starts now.

There was much discussion about the fact that two Democratic Precinct Chairs had been working for the Republican candidate for County Judge.  Gloria advised that it was not acceptable for either a TDW member or a Precinct Chair to support Republicans.  There was more discussion about what could be done.  Susan Reeves read the relevant portion of the Texas Democratic Party Rules.  Esther Martinez made a motion that CBTDW write a letter to Democratic Party Chair, Alex Garcia, Jr., encouraging him to take prompt action against these chairs should complaints be filed against them.  The motion received a second from Mary Saenz, and was passed.

John Kelley then invited CBTDW to join with the Progressive and Populist Caucus as the PPC worked to get more Democrats elected in the upcoming City Council election.  The PPC is attempting to recruit and run a slate of candidates.  He also announced that the PPC now has its own building at 413 Waco St., and will allow any Democratic group to hold meetings there, for a cost of $10 per meeting.  The PPC meets the last Thursday of each month, at 6:30 p.m.  The grand opening of their headquarters will be Jan. 12, 2007.  The PPC is currently organizing a leadership school for next year, with a focus on grassroots organization within each activist’s own neighborhood.  He encouraged Democrats to look at running in non-partisan races, and also encouraged CBTDW to train and recruit candidates from within its own membership.

There was also some discussion about a lack of unity within the Nueces County Democratic Party.  It was suggested that CBTDW invite Chair Alex Garcia, Jr., to the January meeting to see if he would be willing to help correct this situation.  There was some discussion as to why the Democratic vote is dropping off, with Rene Saenz suggesting that the local Party focus on clearly articulating exactly what we stand for.

Under New Business, Sylvia Samaniego told the group that any volunteers could help phone bank for Ciro Rodriguez from their own homes, through the True Blue Action website.

Barbara Cline reported that there is still money left over from the 2006 GOTV fund.  She proposed putting $8000 into an interest bearing account.  Mike Rendon moved that this be done, with a second by Sylvia Samaniego, and the motion passed.

A motion was then made, with second to adjourn, and the motion passed.
