Coastal Bend Texas Democratic Women
Monthly Membership Meeting Minutes

August 28, 2007

President Gloria Caceres called the meeting to order, and recognized the elected officials and new member present.  She also welcomed Peggy Sumner, who was presenting the evening’s program.

Pat Suter then introduced Ms. Sumner, who works for the City of Corpus Christi in the Storm Water Division.  Ms. Sumner presented the program, “Storm Water Management in a Growing Community,” and then answered questions from the audience.

Secretary Susan Reeves presented the minutes, and a motion with second passed to accept them.  Treasurer Barbara Cline gave the Treasurer’s report.

Under Committee Reports, Membership Chair Sheri Phillabaum announced that Sylvia Samaniego was the winner of the membership drive, signing up three new members.  Evy Coppola gave the Fundraising Committee report.  The theme of the banquet is “We Can Do It.”  She said Mikell Smith would be putting together the program and Gloria Caceres will be writing a sponsorship letter to be mailed shortly.  A press release about the banquet had already been sent by Ann Smith to the Caller-Times, and the sponsorship levels and ad prices were given.  Barbara Cline has tickets available for members to sell, and silect auction items were being collected by Evy Coppola.  Communications Chair Ann Smith thanked Lisa Hernandez and Sylvia Samaniego for doing the newsletters and that the September newsletter would feature the upcoming banquet.

John Kelley announced that the city had agreed to post warnings at the bay if bacteria levels were too high, and that there was a new noise ordinance enacted.  In October, there will be votes on a wastewater collection system updates south of Oso Creek.  Kelley is opposed to additional development, as it promotes urban sprawl.  He also announced a new group, Smart Growth for Corpus Christi is being formed.  Lisa Hernandez announced a precinct chair training session on October 4 with VAN training by Anthony Gutierrez.  He will focus on identifying Democratic women in your precinct.  The deadline to register to vote in this November election is October 9.

Gloria then gave a report on the SDEC meeting of August 25, announced that the next meeting would be held at the Retama Library on September 25, and reminded members of several upcoming events being held by various candidates.

Under Old Business, A motion was made to send a letter to County Chair Alex Garcia, requesting a written response to a letter sent by CBTDW last November, encouraging him to take action against three precinct chairs who had worked for Republican candidates.  There was a second, and the motion was then amended to include a copy of the original resolution in the second letter.  The motion passed unanimously.  A motion was then made with second and passed for the meeting to adjourn.
